Native American Studies
The Library’s collection supports the Native American Studies program’s interests in the historical, social, anthropological, economic, aesthetic, community, and cultural aspects of Native American peoples, including tribal sovereignty and self-determination. Particular emphasis is placed upon materials supporting the study of California and Southwestern Native American cultures.
The Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian is one of the collection’s paramount strengths, consisting of about 7,000 volumes and more than 9,000 documents, pamphlets, tape recordings, slides and artwork.
Primary Source Collections
The UCR Library has a significant number of collections on the Native American/First Nations of North America and Central America, ranging from the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian; to personal papers, research collections, and photographic resources in Special Collections and University Archives; to collections in the Water Resources Collections and Archives on water and land rights of Native American/American Indian tribes in the Southwestern United States.
