The Pedagogy Praxis: Foundations and Front-Line Strategies is a new workshop series for graduate students, from UCR Library Teaching & Learning and GrAdvantage
Many graduate students step into a classroom before anyone has had time to talk with them about how teaching works. The Pedagogy Praxis is a new series designed to help close that gap. Offered by UCR Library Teaching & Learning as part of GrAdvantage programming, it helps graduate students grow as instructors, put teaching theory into practice, and build connections with colleagues in other departments.
Beginning Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the series meets twice a month from 1:00 to 1:50 p.m. The second-week session is theory: a discussion-based, reading-group-style conversation in GrAdvantage, with optional readings shared ahead of time. The fourth-week session is practical: we move into a library classroom (Orbach 122, Rivera 138, or Rivera 140) and try out activities together, taking turns as instructor and student. Each month's two sessions build on one topic, and you are welcome to attend one or both. Some topics will return with fresh examples.
This fall, we will explore:
- Citation Justice: Diverse Readings for Your Classroom (Oct. 14 and 28)
- Offload or Overload? AI Literacy and Scaffolding Learning (Nov. 10 and 24)
- Andragogy and Pedagogy Basics: Getting Back to a Beginner Mindset (Dec. 9), followed by an open share-out on how your quarter went (Dec. 16)
The series continues through August 2027 with open educational resources, primary source literacy, gamification, classroom management, media literacy, active learning, flipped classrooms, and writing a statement of teaching philosophy.
The skills you build here apply to the classes you teach today and to your job search tomorrow. You will leave with tested activities, practice collaborating with librarians and guest speakers, and language for describing your teaching.
All graduate students are welcome, from every discipline. Library staff and faculty interested in pedagogy may attend, though seats will go to graduate students first if space runs short. Bring your lunch; brown bags are welcome.
