Interlibrary Loan Update: My ILL Retiring, Tipasa Launching July 1

The way you place interlibrary loan requests will stay the same; this upgrade improves behind-the-scenes workflows.
Beginning July 1, the UCR Library will transition to Tipasa, an interlibrary loan (ILL) system that will replace VDX/My ILL. This update will streamline internal workflows and introduce efficiencies and automation on the back end. For patrons, the requesting process will remain unchanged.
You will continue to place ILL requests through UC Library Search.
The most important changes to note:
- Electronic documents will now be delivered via email only.
- You can still log into your UC Library Search account to view all requested or loaned ILL materials and to request renewals.
- To log in to your UC Library Search account, visit search.library.ucr.edu. On the homepage, you can select Sign In at the top right or select Sign in to your Account under Library Account in the middle of the homepage. After making your selection, select UCR Net ID to sign in and you’ll be taken to the UCR’s Single-Sign-On page where you can log in.
- You will be able to view items you request in My ILL through December (to access older requests and documents). Requests made after July 1 will not be accessible via My ILL.
We appreciate your patience as our ILL Team works through this system transition and troubleshoots any potential issues.
If you encounter any issues or have any questions, please contact us at interlib@ucr.edu. For general information on interlibrary loan at UCR, please visit: https://library.ucr.edu/using-the-library/interlibrary-loan
Virtual Reality Prototype Returns to UCR Library
Dr. Juliette Levy returned to UCR Library to take students on a second foray into her early-stage virtual reality prototype, “Che’s Village.”
The prototype was built to amplify students' experience of studying Che Guevara's speech, "Social Ideals of the Rebel Army," which he delivered on January 27, 1959.
The second round of VR experimentation took place in Rivera Library, Room 403, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Thursday, June 1 and Friday, June 2. The experience took approximately 10 to 15 minutes to explore, and developers were available to discuss user feedback immediately afterward.
Levy and her co-creator Tawny Schlieski listened to feedback from the first-round beta testers when they debuted “Che’s Village” on February 17, 2017. They had integrated users’ previous suggestions into this newly redesigned VR module.
This second iteration of the VR platform was developed for Levy’s History 75 (Introduction to Latin American History) course, but all interested UC Riverside students, faculty, and staff were welcome and encouraged to participate.
Renowned Science Fiction and Fantasy artist Michael Whelan speaks at UCR Library
Renowned science fiction artist Michael Whelan came to speak at the UCR Library on the evening of May 18, 2017.
“An Evening with Michael Whelan” was co-sponsored by the Riverside Art Museum (RAM), and ran from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in Special Collections & University Archives. Whelan lectured to a standing-room only crowd about his career, his creative inspiration, and more.
Special Collections had also prepared a display of noteworthy books from the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy that feature Whelan’s cover art, which is still available for viewing on the fourth floor of Rivera Library.
The Jay Kay and Doris Klein Librarian for Science Fiction JJ Jacobson said that she was spoiled for choice. “I got 555 results one way, and 568 another,” Jacobson said of her catalog search results.
Jacobson said that she could have approached the display design from a number of different methods, but in the end, she decided to highlight Eaton Collection books by authors that many consider to be the “Grand Masters” of Science Fiction and Fantasy, including Ray Bradbury, Poul Anderson, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Andre Norton, and Samuel Delany.
As the most honored artist in Science Fiction, Whelan has won an unprecedented 15 Hugo Awards (which is the equivalent of an Academy Award in the science fiction art world), three World Fantasy Awards, and 13 Chesleys from the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists. The readers of Locus Magazine (for SF insiders) have named him “Best Professional Artist” 30 times in their annual poll, most recently in 2014. The Spectrum Annual of the Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art named Whelan a Grand Master in 2004.
Other noteworthy awards include a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators, a Vargas Award, a Grumbacher Gold Medal, and the Solstice Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America.
The Riverside Art Museum had an exhibition of Whelan's artwork titled “Beyond Science Fiction: The Alternative Realism of Michael Whelan” on display until May 25, 2017.
