Library Desktop Computers Get an Upgrade

Faster computers, dedicated UCR NetID stations, and open-to-all community computers now greet patrons on the first floor of both libraries.

The modernization of the Library's patron desktop computers is officially complete. Led by the Library's Cyberinfrastructure team, this initiative began with the physical consolidation of all patron desktop computers onto the first floors of both the Tomás Rivera Library and the Raymond L. Orbach Library, creating a more accessible, centralized hub for everyone.

As part of this upgrade, all 41 computers transitioned from Windows 10 to Windows 11, giving users an improved digital experience. The desktop systems are now organized into two categories: UCR NetID Workstations requiring a UCR NetID to log in and Community Computers, which remain open-access for the wider public and don't require any authentication, just like before.

"With these new upgraded systems, we are able to offer our patrons a more user-friendly and secure computing experience, " said Manager of Cyberinfrastructure Dan Szilagyi.

On the first floor of Rivera Library, patrons will find 15 UCR NetID Workstations alongside 6 Community Computers, while Orbach Library's first floor offers 15 UCR NetID Workstations and 5 Community Computers. UCR students are welcome to use either type of station, and clear signage reading UCR NetID Workstation or Community Computer is posted at each desk to help everyone easily identify the right station for their needs.
