Tuskegee Airmen traveling exhibit lands in LA for Black History Month

More News

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, the L.A. County Department of Military & Veterans Affairs (MVA) hosted a reception to kick off Black History Month, featuring a special art exhibit of the WWII flying group, the Tuskegee Airmen, on loan courtesy of the UCR Library.

The display will be open to the public during regular business hours at the Bob Hope Patriotic Hall in Los Angeles from Feb. 5 - 27, 2020. This venue is a historical building dedicated to assisting and memorializing US Veterans, so the exhibit supports their mission.

During the opening reception, special guest and American hero Lt. Col. Theodore “Ted” Lumpkin, a documented original Tuskegee Airman, discussed his experience during the second World War and answered questions.

Commissioned by the UCR Library in 2016, Ann Marshall and Shar Huston of Annex Design Services originally created the concept for the exhibition materials.

Since 2016, the traveling exhibit has been featured at various venues, including the Association of African American Museums Annual Conference, the University of California, San Diego, and the San Bernardino County Museum, among others.

UC Library Search: One University, One Library, One Discovery Tool

More News

As one of the largest public university systems in the world, the University of California holds a vast collection of resources in its libraries.

However, until now, each campus library used its own catalog, making it difficult for patrons to find items held at other campuses without using a separate search tool.

Beginning July 27, 2021, UC Library Search will bring all UC campus libraries into the same system, which will allow you to find resources from any campus simply and quickly, saving precious time and effort.

UC Library Search will look the same as the discovery tool that the UCR Library has already been using since 2018, but comes with expanded features.

With this update, you will now be able to see what you have borrowed, request extensions, and manage your account with a single login. You’ll no longer need to log in to UCR’s local catalog, Melvyl, and Interlibrary Loan (ILL) separately to find and request items from outside UC Riverside.

Another exciting new benefit is that you will be able to pick up UC Library materials from any campus, giving you the option to check out materials from the UC library closest to you.

UC Library Search is the next step in the evolution of a unified UC discovery tool, and will enable greater collaboration between campuses in research and collections management.

For more information, including an updated FAQ, please see our UC Library Search website, or contact Tiffany Moxham, Associate University Librarian for Content and Discovery.

OpenAthens is Now the Preferred Way to Access Resources Off-Campus

More News Open Athens Logo

We are excited to share that the UCR Library has fully implemented OpenAthens, a new and improved way to access library resources from off-campus!

OpenAthens is available in addition to the existing GlobalProtect VPN, giving you more flexibility in how you connect.

What is OpenAthens?

OpenAthens is an identity management platform that ensures fast, seamless, and secure access to the UCR Library’s licensed resources. Integrated with our Central Authentication Service (CAS), OpenAthens lets you log in using your UCR NetID and password—no extra steps needed.

What Has Changed?
  • Simplified Access: Use your UCR NetID and password to log in to your library account, which will also start an OpenAthens session.
  • One-Time Authentication: With OpenAthens, you only need to sign in once per session for uninterrupted access—no more concerns about dropped VPN connections!
  • Faster Browsing: Experience quicker page and content loading compared to VPN.
GlobalProtect VPN and On-Site Access

OpenAthens is the preferred method for off-campus access to library resources. However, we will continue to support IP address authentication and there will be no changes to the way you access resources on-site. The VPN will remain an option for off-campus access.

How Can I Start Using OpenAthens?

There are several ways to use OpenAthens:

  1. Start with UC Library Search (the library catalog):
    • Go to UC Library Search and select “Connect from off-campus” when prompted, or use the Sign In link at the top right. This will sign you into both your library account and OpenAthens.
  2. Sign in at a publisher or resource page
    • Look for Sign in Through My Institution, Sign in via OpenAthens, or similar on your favorite resource page. Search for “Riverside” to find UCR, then choose “University of California Riverside Library” from the OpenAthens screen, if prompted.
  3. Direct Links
    • Access a resource directly, like JSTOR, using an “Athenized” link: JSTOR via OpenAthens. Want to create your own links to licensed resources for use in your syllabus or Canvas? You can Athenize your links with the OpenAthens Link Generator.
More Information

Please note that a small number of resources are not accessible using OpenAthens. Please continue to use the GlobalProtect VPN for the following:

  • China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database (CNKI)
  • Rafu Shimpo digital archive via EastView

For more information, please see our Connect from Off-Campus page and our OpenAthens FAQ.

We’re confident that OpenAthens will enhance your research experience, offering easier, faster, and more reliable access to the resources you need.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to colldev@ucr.edu

Library to host Open Access Week 2021

More News

The University of California, Riverside Library will host Open Access Week 2021, as part of the global event called International Open Access Week.

It Matters How We Open Knowledge: Building Structural Equity" is the 2021 theme. The event series will kick off on Monday, Oct. 25, with three workshops for the 2021 event.

Open Access Week is an opportunity for the academic and research community to learn about the potential benefits of sharing what they’ve learned with colleagues, and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make “open access” a new norm in scholarship, research and data planning and preservation. The Open Access movement is made of up advocates (librarians, researchers, publishers, etc.) who promote the free, immediate, and online publication of research.

This will be the eleventh International Open Access Week program hosted by the UCR Library. The Open Access Week workshops are free and open to the public.

4 to Explore: April Selections from Special Collections

More News

This month in 4 to Explore, your Special Collections librarians and archivists have selected four new items and placed them on hold in the reading room.

Here's what you can see this April in 4 to Explore:

UCR photographs
Student social events from the 1950s

Mission Inn menus
See what was served in the 1910s

My Pretty Pony
Barbara Kruger illustrates Stephen King's story

Wild Gardens of Old California
How a Scotsman took wildflowers to Britain

Why you should try 4 to Explore:

Special Collections materials are kept in closed stacks, which means you can’t see the shelves and browse. You also can’t check things out and take them home. So, 4 to Explore is a great way to experience first-hand some of the collections that truly make the UCR Library unique.

4 to Explore will give you the chance to visit a reading room, like the ones that are used for archival research or by rare book scholars, and to get a sampling of our collections without having to submit a request ahead of time.

You’ll be asked to show photo ID and to check your bags – but don’t worry! Our UCR Library staff will explain everything to you when you arrive.

We will also have rotating exhibits of items from the collections on display.

Where to find 4 to Explore:

Department: Special Collections & University Archives

Where: Take elevators to 4th floor of Rivera Library

Hours11:00 am - 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday

Bring: Photo ID

Don’t bring: Food or drinks

Who: Everyone is welcome. 4 to Explore is more of an individual experience, but we can usually accommodate up to two people using the same item at the same time, so feel free to bring a friend.

What to expect: Staff will help you sign in and feel comfortable in the reading room. It should take about 5-10 minutes for you to get up to the 4th floor and get settled. Then you can stay and enjoy as long as you like!

Want to receive updates each month with more details about our 4 to Explore items? Sign up here.
