Enhanced library catalog will launch July 2018

More News

The library catalog will undergo a significant transformation this July when the UCR Library deploys an enhanced search tool with a modern, mobile-responsive visual display.

Designed by Ex Libris, the search tool will provide a streamlined user experience (UX) with improved access to library materials and intuitive ways for students, faculty and researchers to discover new content.

The added value to users will include:

  • Combined access to both print materials and online licensed e-resources
  • Easy-to-tailor search results using active content filters in the sidebar
  • Book and journal cover image previews
  • Table of contents previews
  • Full text access to digital items when searching through the on-campus network or VPN

In addition to user benefits, the new back-end software will give library staff a set of robust, cutting-edge tools to manage collection inventory, track user analytics, and guide future acquisition efforts. This gives staff a way to manage the life cycle of resources, so the library has a better understanding of how patrons use resources, to allow us to allocate our funding more strategically.

Prior to selection, a library-wide task force reviewed proposals from several companies and concluded that the Ex Libris software suite was the best “next generation” system for the library.

UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis have already adopted the Ex Libris suite, while UC Santa Cruz and UC Irvine will go live this summer, along with UC Riverside and almost 50 other university libraries around the globe.

“Moving to this vendor will give us the best UX and the strongest set of tools to move forward,” explained Associate University Librarian for the Digital Library Diane Bisom. “It’s cloud-hosted instead of living on our own servers, with no additional cost as new updates are released. It’s something we can grow on as the library incorporates more and more e-resources into our collections, while enhancing access to our print collection.”

#Puppylove study seeks input from UCR community

More News

A team of Healthy Campus Initiative grant recipients is approaching the end of their year-long feasibility study, #puppylove: an on-site, year-round animal therapy program for the UCR campus community.

They are now seeking input from UC Riverside students, faculty, and staff.

The #puppylove study, sponsored by the UCR Healthy Campus Initiative with funding from the UC-wide Healthy Campus Network, seeks to determine faculty, staff, and student interest in an on-site, year-round Campuswide Wellness Dogs (CWD) program.

The proposed CWD program would be in addition to the Therapy Fluffies event that takes place during the quarterly Finals Week Stress Relief event series, sponsored by the UCR Library in collaboration with The WELL and UCR Active Minds.

"A CWD program would be an exciting and innovative method for improving the overall physical, mental and social well-being of the broader UCR community," said project lead Patricia Smith-Hunt, Head of Preservation Services at the UCR Library. "Our team is excited about the research study we are conducting."

There are separate survey forms for UCR faculty and staff and for students. Each survey takes about 5 minutes to complete, and the deadline to participate has been extended to Wednesday, April 10.

Participation is voluntary and answers will remain anonymous.

The #puppylove team included several UCR Library employees: Smith-Hunt was the project lead;  Financial and Acquisition Analyst Jacqueline Bates; Serials Assistant Andi Newman; Circulation / Reserves Services Manager Sahra Missaghieh Klawitter; and Access Services Desk Coordinator Elisha Hankins.

Smith-Hunt added, "The #puppylove team thanks the UCR community for participating in the survey."

Tomás Rivera: UCR and Higher Education Retrospective / Una retrospective sobre UCR y la Educación Superior

More Past Exhibits

This exhibition showcases the life and work of author, poet, teacher, activist, and past UCR Chancellor Tomás Rivera. Rivera was born in 1935 to Mexican migrant workers, and was among the first generation of Chicanos to earn a PhD. He worked tirelessly to make higher education accessible to students from underrepresented communities. He also took an active role in supporting Chicano/a youth groups and anti-violence programs in local high schools.

Rivera’s contributions to literature, civic life, and higher education are illustrated by materials from his archives. Original objects on display include family photographs, professional papers, and works from the Chicano Renaissance including a first edition of Rivera's novel …y no se lo tragó la tierra and a hand-written chapter from this celebrated work.

Rivera died at the age of 48, but his work as an advocate for social change and advancement through education still resonates today. His name and legacy are kept alive in many ways, including through the renaming of UCR’s first library in his memory, shortly after his passing in 1984.

The UCR Library is an active participant in getting grants for the University and its researchers.

Online access to UCR's books & more during COVID-19 closure

More News

Need a book for your research, but can't physically get it from the UCR Library buildings due to the COVID-19 closure?

We have a solution!

Until Sept. 7, 2021, UCR faculty, researchers and students can get many of the books they need online through the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS), which grants lawful access to digital copies to over 50% of the physical books held by the UCR Library.

Even better, HathiTrust recently added access to digitized volumes from all libraries in the ten-campus University of California network, raising the total number of e-books available to UCR Library patrons to more than 10 million.

Through the HathiTrust ETAS, UCR faculty, staff, and students can:

  • Read books owned by the UCR Library (or other UC campus libraries) online in a web browser. There is no option to download the work in full.
  • "Check out” a copy for one hour, with an auto-renew feature for books still in active use (turning pages, clicking, or scrolling).
  • Access items 1-1: One copy on the member library shelf, one individual access to the digital copy. Two copies, two concurrent users of the digital item.

How to access UCR print materials via HathiTrust

  1. Go to hathitrust.org and select the yellow “LOG IN” button.
  2. Select University of California, Riverside from the list of partner institutions. Select “Continue."
  3. You will arrive at UCR’s Central Authentication Service. Enter your UCR NetID and Password.
  4. When you have successfully logged in, you will be returned to the HathiTrust website.

Review the HathiTrust FAQ and Use Guide before you get started.

Remember: The UCR Library staff are still available to answer questions and provide support! Review this new LibGuide on Expanded free access during the COVID-19 closure for more details. Visit our Ask a Librarian page if you need further assistance, after review.
